creativity and innovation
what is creativity?
We at DEVA believe that everyone is creative. Everyone makes decisions, manages change and solves problems. In order to do this they must be creative. However, people have different styles of creativity which affect their behaviour and different ways of showing their creativity. The ability or skill to paint, sculpt or work in different mediums is only one form of creativity married to technical competence and craftsmanship.
what is innovation?
Innovation is one outcome of the creative process; usually something that is outside the previous paradigm. This is a very useful thing for organisations to aim for but not at the cost of assuming that this is the only worthwhile result of creativity.
DEVA adds value to creativity by:
- believing that everyone is creative
- demonstrating that each individual can make a creative contribution
- being able to show people their creative style and how to use it by way of a simple questionnaire
- supporting people working with others of a different style to themselves
- enabling people to show their creativity by using models, techniques and puzzles
how we do it?
Part of DEVA work is to enable people to get in touch with their own creativity. We do this in several ways:
One way is by the use of the Kirton Adaption and Innovation Inventory. This reveals an individual's style for using their creativity to approach, define and solve problems.
We use our own Colour Spectrum as a model to support different problem-solving styles.
Another method DEVA uses is to explain in memorable language that everyone has mindsets and where they come from, about frames of reference, and about matching everyday experiences to our existing Grid of Experience.
We use structured brain-storming techniques such as "Help/Hinder" and "Get Fired" to access different parts of people's grids of experience.
We use metaphor and suggest that people expand their consciousness by the use of observation, poetry and literature. See our Thought for the Moment and Book of the Moment.
We use many creative tests and puzzles which people can try out. One is the Nine Dot Puzzle.
